PDF | Ringbark repair / by Charlie Noton

We recently delivered a project at a major UK industry headquarters within an ongoing hard landscaping and building construction site. Literally one day after we planted a beautiful Zelkova serrata 'Green Vase', a not so beautiful container lorry reversed into it!

Below we detail a simple step by step process for immediate repairs to bark damage, which was a request from our client before they considered outright replacement.

There is much debate around wound paints at the moment and the risks of sealing in an environment for fungal spore development. This guidance is based on the Royal Horticultural factsheet on ringbark repairs. We suspect that the moss provides a moist environment around the wound that also allows for gas exchange, therefore reducing the acceleration of internal fungal developments whilst protecting it from external attack.
