Charlie N Marsden - Director & Lead Consultant

Charlie is the founder and lead consultant of Tree Research Limited. Originally trained as an arborist, he has been working in the arboricultural industry for over twenty years - managing, maintaining and creating historic gardens and parklands in the UK.

Charlie’s love of trees and interest in their environmental impact inspired him to establish Tree Research in 2004, as a means of protecting tree populations and enhancing our appreciation and understanding of them. A naturalist at heart, Charlie has an intuitive sense of what trees need, and can source, supply, plant and care for trees in a variety of environments.

His aesthetic inspiration derives from the gardens and parklands of Capability Brown, in which he grew up. His planting schemes reflect this by blending formal gardens and topiaries seamlessly into parkland and the surrounding countryside.

Charlie has extensive experience in both the private and public sector, having worked in small private gardens and large parklands.

Charlie oversees all aspects of Tree Research including design, consultancy, sourcing of trees, and planting. A ‘hands on’ creative director, he enjoys meeting garden designers, landscape architects and private individuals to explore, support and develop the client’s vision for their project.  He remains involved throughout client projects, with the support of his growing team.

Charlie is a member of the International Dendrological Society, a friend of the Society of Garden Designers, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture and is qualified as a professional tree inspector under the government training body, LANTRA.

Michael Buck - Procurement Manager

Michael joined Tree Research at the beginning of 2018, having spent 4 years at a perennial and tree production nursery. 2019 brings him into his 13th year in horticulture, having gained extensive knowledge across a varied skill set within the industry.
Michael’s strengths lie heavily in client relationship and he supports Charlie in providing consultation, design and project management. As procurement manager, his main focus is on the sourcing of outstanding trees, shrubs and topiary and all trees are handpicked. He can procure the trees for every type of project, whether a parkland redevelopment, hotel interior or a on one off special tree for a private garden.

Susie Sullivan - Client Liaison

Susie’s varied background in administration and marketing across the charity and private sector, places her perfectly for the varied and fast paced workplace that is Tree Research.

She is likely the first person you will speak with when calling the office and supports Charlie in keeping in touch with clients when work takes him away from the office. Susie helps keep moving projects forwards and also coordinates the Tree Research appointments and projects diary.
